Denn der IS stellt für das Assad Regime keineswegs das Hauptproblem dar, ganz im Gegenteil: Je mehr Islamisten sich in Syrien tummeln, desto einfacher ist es für das Regime, sich als säkulare Alternative zu präsentieren. So schrieb das Time Magazine vor einem Jahr schon:
„Assad does not see ISIS as his primary problem, the businessman says. ‚The regime fears the Free Syrian Army and the Nusra Front, not ISIS. They [the FSA and Nusra] state their goal is to remove the President. But ISIS doesn’t say that. They have never directly threatened Damascus.‘ As the businessman notes, the strikes on ISIS targets are minimal. ‚If the regime were serious about getting rid of ISIS, they would have bombed Raqqa by now. Instead they bomb other cities, where the FSA is strong.‘ That said, the businessman does not believe that the regime has a formal relationship with ISIS, just a pragmatic one. ‚The more powerful ISIS grows, the more they are useful for the regime. They make America nervous, and the Americans in turn see the regime as a kind of bulwark against ISIS.‘
A senior Western diplomat who specializes in the Syrian civil war agrees that ISIS is seen as an asset by Assad. ‚They will do whatever it takes to devalue the opposition, even if it means strengthening ISIS. They know that if it comes to choosing between the black flag [of ISIS] and Damascus, the international community will choose Damascus.‘ And the strategy has worked extremely well. ‚The way it’s going now, it’s a matter of months, not even a year, that the moderate opposition is so weakened that it won’t be a factor anymore. So in just a few months from now the regime will be able to achieve its strategic goal of forcing the world to choose between Damascus and the black flags.‘“
Jüngst nun erklärte sogar offiziell ein Mitglied des syrischen Parlaments, Khaled Abboud, in einer Fernsehsendung, dass Damaskus die islamische Terrororganisation infiltriert habe und direkten Einfluss auf die Aktionen des IS nähme:
„President Assad’s government has infiltrated the Islamic State group and is fully aware of the intricacies behind terrorist attacks taking place in Turkey, a Syrian diplomat has said. ‚The Syrian security establishment and the Syrian intelligence services have infiltrated these networks [Islamic State and other militant groups in Syria],‘ said Secretary of the Syrian Parliament Khaled Abboud, in an interview on Syrian state TV channel earlier this week. ‚They have penetrated them and taken control of key structures within,‘ added the Syrian MP.“

Bestätigen lässt sich die Information nicht, aber wundern täte es einen nicht, spräche der Mann die Wahrheit. Das syrische Regime unterhält seit Jahrzehnten engste Kontakte zu den unterschiedlichsten Terrororganisationen im Nahen Osten, die alle eine Postadresse in Damaskus besitzen. Es ist militärisch eng mit der Hizbollah verbündet und unterstützt neben der Hamas auch die PFLP und andere palästinensische Organisationen. Ohne die Unterstützung des syrischen Geheimdienstes wäre Al Qaida im Irak nach 2003 niemals so stark geworden, nur dank finanzieller, logistischer und militärischer Hilfe aus Damaskus konnte der sogenannte „irakische Widerstand“ überhaupt so stark werden. Ironie der Geschichte: Viele der Gründungsmitglieder des Islamischen Staates lernten ihr blutiges Handwerk damals im Irak, und als irakische und syrische Regierung noch keine Verbündeten, waren, gab es heftige Kritik aus Bagdad:
„Iraq’s former national security advisor Mowaffak al-Rubaie had warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against supporting ‚jihadi‘ militants who later become leaders in the Islamic State (IS), the former top Iraqi official said. The alleged support and training for the militants took place in Syria and was carried out by government security forces who reportedly wanted to keep American troops busy fighting in Iraq following the 2003 US-led invasion of the country.
‚I went and met President Bashar al-Assad twice, and presented him with material evidence, documents, satellite pictures, confessions, all sort of evidence that his security forces were involved in active (sic) and transporting jihadist from Syria to Iraq,‘ Rubaie told Al Jazeera, in the first of a two-part documentary entitled Enemy of Enemies: The Rise of ISIL aired earlier this week. ‚And also, there were training camps with names and locations. He (Assad) was in total denial of that.‘“
Sollte sich also bewahrheiten, was seit Jahren als offenes Geheimnis gilt und nun von Abboud sogar offiziell bestätigt wird, zeigte sich einmal mehr, was für eine irrsinnige Strategie all jene verfolgen, die im Assad-Regime und seinen Verbündeten, der Hizbollah und dem Iran, Verbündete im Kampf gegen den islamischen Staat sehen. Denn weiterhin gilt, was ich Ende 2015 auf Mena-Watch schrieb:
„Die ganze Legitimität, die der syrische Diktator noch besitzt, ist die des ‚kleineren Übels‘ angesichts der Barbarei des Islamischen Staates (IS), an dessen Entstehung und Ausbreitung eben das Regime in Damaskus tätig mitgeholfen hat. Nicht nur, weil der IS vornehmlich andere syrische Rebellen bekämpft, sondern auch, weil das ‚kleinere Übel‘ nur solange eine Existenzberechtigung hat, wie eben ein ‚größeres Übel‘ überhaupt existiert. Im Dienste des Machterhalts haben alle ‚kleineren Übel‘ im Nahen Osten ein existentielles Interesse am Fortbestand des je ‚größeren Übels‘.“
